Curtin University ‘Greater Curtin’ Masterplan Review 2017

Review of Curtin University’s expansion plan to create a mixed use precinct on their main campus, including commercial offices, student accommodation, retail and new faculties. Focus on connectivity, ground plane activation and integration with the existing campus.

CHALLENGE

Six Degrees Urban were commissioned to review the Greater Curtin Masterplan and Design Guidelines work to date. The work considered the broad concepts and proposed structure of the project, with a specific aim of providing advice around how to best ensure the Ground Plane of Greater Curtin Stage 1 and the associated retail is best placed for success over the short, medium and long term. Greater Curtin is an initiative to create a better quality campus environment and experience through urban renewal and other initiatives which attract a greater diversity of visitors, improve accessibility, develop a year round sustainable economy and provide more engaging and higher quality spaces. The realisation of this vision is important in enhancing Curtin University’s position in Australia and within an increasingly global higher education marketplace.

SOLUTION

The primary focus of this report is to provide Retail Activation Guidelines. These will operate at the fine grain level, however in order to understand how these guidelines can maximise the possibilities for success, we need to understand the broader structural intentions, the place hierarchy and movement systems of the campus and surrounds. All these things will have a direct influence on the future success of a new retail area in Greater Curtin Stage 1. increases for Main Street retail over time. Role of This Document

INSIGHTS

These Ground Plane Design Guidelines (GPDG’s) provides recommendations around how the buildings should interface with the streets and plazas to ensure the Stage 1 area is a vibrant and active addition to the Curtin campus. They will also outline the background rationale for the proposed street and movement pathway hierarchy and how this will help to integrate this new precinct with the broader Curtin University Campus.
