Towards a network city…planning for the future of the Sydney Metropolitan Area over the next 20 years

YEAR: 2009-10

CLIENT: Department of Planning, NSW

Contracted into NSW government for the 2010 Metropolitan Plan update, SIx Degrees Urban generated a network city concept for Sydney’s long-term urban structure, which was adopted within the strategy.

Our focus was on researching and writing the Global City chapter, comparing Sydney across a range of recognised City Ranking systems.

The Metropolitan Plan for Sydney 2036 was a scheduled five yearly update to the 2005 Metropolitan Plan for Sydney. This was updated in 2014 with A Plan for Growing Sydney, and again in March 2018 with “A Metropolis of Three Cities”. This plan was delivered by the Greater Sydney Commission, a progressive and important new layer appointed by but not within State Government, ideally positioned to deliver a more independent planning framework for Sydney.
